Third-party verification strengthens the reliability of Meconet’s emissions calculations
Meconet has introduced third-party verification for its emissions calculations to strengthen the accuracy, transparency and comparability of its emissions data. OpenCO2net Oy, a provider of emissions calculation tools and expert services, has verified Meconet’s emissions calculations for 2025. Going forward, emissions data will be compiled in the OpenCO2net service, where the calculations will be maintained and further developed as part of Meconet’s environmental work.
Verification helps ensure the quality, transparency and comparability of emissions data. Third-party verification also supports Meconet’s EcoVadis assessment. EcoVadis considers the reliability of emissions data in its evaluations, and independent verification provides additional assurance that the reported emissions data has been properly validated.
As part of the verification process, an external expert reviews the emissions figures, calculation principles, reporting boundaries and emission factors used in the calculations. The aim is to ensure that the reported information is as accurate, transparent and comparable as possible.
Independent assessment strengthens the reliability of emissions data
In addition to the emissions figures themselves, the verification process reviews the underlying source data, calculation methods and emission factors. During the process, some refinements have been made to Meconet’s emissions calculations, but no significant deficiencies have been identified.
Going forward, the same approach will provide a consistent basis for monitoring emissions development from year to year.
– Calculating emissions is not straightforward in every respect. It is important to us that the figures reflect the actual emissions from our operations as accurately as possible and that they are comparable with our other reporting, says Miranda Raitanen, Environmental Coordinator at Meconet.
Going forward, the same approach will provide a consistent basis for monitoring emissions development from year to year. As comparable data accumulates over several years, progress in emissions reductions can also be demonstrated more clearly.
Transparent data also benefits customers
Requirements related to environmental and emissions data in industrial companies have increased rapidly. Meconet is receiving an increasing number of customer enquiries related to environmental responsibility and emissions, making reliable and consistent data increasingly important in customer cooperation as well.
Verified calculations also help distinguish concrete emissions reduction work from general sustainability claims.
– Customers need to be able to trust that the emissions information we provide is based on reliable calculations. Third-party verification increases transparency and demonstrates that our emissions reduction work is based on measured data, Raitanen says.
Verified emissions calculations also help distinguish concrete emissions reduction actions from general sustainability claims. Emissions development can be monitored transparently, and the impact of implemented measures can be assessed using consistent and comparable data.
From emissions calculations to concrete reductions
Improving the accuracy of emissions data is part of Meconet’s long-term emissions reduction work. Reliable emissions calculations help identify the most significant sources of emissions and make it possible to target reduction measures where they can have the greatest impact.
For Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, Meconet is currently examining areas such as the energy efficiency of its factories, emissions from heating, and opportunities to utilise waste heat generated in production.
For Scope 3 emissions, raw materials play a significant role, particularly the metals used in production. For this reason, the next phase will place greater emphasis on supplier management and on how emissions reductions can be advanced together with partners across the supply chain.
