The Earth is warming at a dangerous pace impacting us all. Carbon dioxide emissions must be significantly and rapidly reduced. So we must act now. Meconet, along with its partner network, is now offering its customers the opportunity to impact their own CO2 emissions through the use of low-carbon steel.
Our partner, Tata Steel Europe , is Europe’s second-largest steel producer and leading producer of steel in demanding qualities. The company has introduced a low-carbon steel to the market, which can drastically reduce their customer’s Scope 3 emissions already today. Scope 3 emissions are those from sources not owned or directly controlled by the company but are related to its operations.
The company’s Zeremis concept (Zero emissions) enables individual actors to reduce their carbon footprint in their own production in different fields. The Zeremis Carbon Lite product is a flexible solution, where one can decide how much emissions they want to reduce by a certified insetting based carbon reduction programme.
A Cumulative Positive Spiral
The Zeremis Carbon Lite offering is a self-accelerating fly-wheel It aims to give smaller actors the opportunity for their own emission reductions through collaboration. Here’s how it works:
- Tata Steel invests in reducing CO2 emissions, and process emissions decrease as a result of carbon neutrality projects.
- Verified CO2 savings are delivered to a “carbon bank”. These savings can be offered to customers through certificates, all fully certified by DNV.
- By purchasing Zeremis products, you can reduce your own Scope 3 CO2 emissions.
- The proceeds of the certificates will be re-invested by tata in new carbon reduction projects hence enforcing the speed of decarbonisation.
“Transitioning to carbon neutrality is a journey we want to take together with our customers and their clients. The responsible production of steel must be seen in a broader context. Our Zeremis carbon lite solution is credible and effective, I dare say. We need to act now to reduce CO2 emissions and move towards carbon neutrality as quickly as possible. It enables our customers to act now, test the market and improve their competitive position, a clear win-win” says Jaap Jan Aardenburg, marketing manager at Tata Steel.
Design Phase Choices Play a Key Role
In our previous blog post ,, Juha Tolvanen explained how impacting CO2 emissions largely originates from the product design phase. The Zeremis concept is now a tangible option for material choices, offering a significant opportunity for your company’s emission targets.
“Meconet is a family business, and it’s crucial for our future that we and our customers act responsibly. Therefore, reducing emissions in our supply chain plays a particularly large role. In addition to our own carbon footprint, we can impact our customers’ CO2 emissions through design work and responsible raw material choices.
We feel a strong obligation to ensure that our customers are aware of the solutions available on the market today for us to utilize together,” says Juuso Virtanen, Meconet’s procurement director.
